In a tragic case that underscores the growing danger of digital exploitation, a Nigerian man has been extradited to the United States to face charges in connection with the suicide of 17-year-old Gavin Guffey, the son of South Carolina State Representative Brandon Guffey. Gavin took his own life in July 2022 after being targeted in a revenge porn scheme orchestrated through social media.
The suspect, Hassanbunhussein Abolore Lawal, posed as a young woman online and convinced Gavin to share private images. Lawal then threatened to publicly release those images unless Gavin paid money. Although Gavin complied, the threats continued. Just hours later, Gavin died by suicide.
Following the incident, Rep. Guffey spearheaded the passage of “Gavin’s Law”, signed into law in South Carolina in 2023. The law criminalizes revenge porn and online sexual exploitation, elevating it to a felony with enhanced penalties if the victim is a minor, suffers injury, or dies as a result.
Lawal now faces multiple federal charges, including child exploitation resulting in death, cyberstalking, and fraudulent use of identification. His arrest and extradition reflect an aggressive effort to prosecute international revenge porn cases and seek justice for victims like Gavin.
